Tips for the roasted sweet potatoes recipe

We love the simplicity of this roasted sweet potatoes recipe. Here are a few tips to make the best roasted sweet potatoes ever.

  • Roasting time will depend on the thickness of your sweet potato slices: the thicker, the longer.
  • You can add chili powder, Cayenne, or smoked paprika to enhance the flavors of these roasted sweet potatoes.
  • Swap fresh rosemary instead of thyme if you prefer. We find fresh thyme more subtle on these baked sweet potatoes, but rosemary will work also great.

Tips for buying sweet potatoes for roasting

Look for plump potatoes that feel heavy in your hand compared to their size, and with even, spotless skin without discolorations. Store sweet potatoes in a dry, cool, dark place (like a pantry or cupboard, not the fridge) for two weeks. Our favorite sweet potatoes for roasting are the Red Garnet and Jewel varieties.

How to cut sweet potatoes for roasting

To make the best roasted sweet potatoes, we recommend you first peel the skins off the sweet potatoes for better flavor and texture.

  • Trim off the ends of the sweet potato and cut a lengthwise strip using your knife or a vegetable peeler with several passes: removing a thin lengthwise strip on the bottom of the sweet potato allows you to maintain the sweet potato firmly on your cutting board for cutting.
  • Holding firmly the sweet potato against the cutting board with one hand, cut the sweet potato into slices.

How long to roast the sweet potato slices

This will depend on how thin you slice the sweet potatoes. In general, the thinner the slices, the faster they cook but as we stack them in a spiral for presentation, you can plan for roasting the sweet potatoes for 35 minutes when the oven is set to 400°F (200ºC).

This turned out great. Since I was needing more & only had the 2 sweet potatoes, I added sliced russet potatoes. I alternated them with the sweet potatoes. Looked very pretty & was delicious. Thanks!

Made these just last evening. So tasty. I’ve made them before and they are on a rotation at our house.

Made both the sweet potatoes and then made with carrots (the huge thick ones from Latin American markets). Absolutely delicious!

Delicious. I do wish you’d give a an approximate weight for the sweet potatoes as they come in much varying sizes. And maybe an approximate thickness of slices. Also, no need to waste a plastic bag. I gently mixed the sweet potatoes and other ingredients in a big mixing bowl before arranging in the baking dish One more thing, I made my own mixture of Italian seasoning as I don’t keep that one in my pantry sinceI have all the ingredients that it’s made of.

So great! Next time, I’ll do a light shake of sea salt when it’s right out of the oven.

Made this for Thanksgiving and it was a big hit with my family- who are not fans of the typical sugary sweet sweet potato casseroles. It was delicious and a perfect complement to the turkey and usual side dishes. As a bonus, it also looks beautiful. This will definitely be on our menu again!

After years of making an old family recipe for sweet potatoes involving orange zest and sugar, I decided to search for something different. I made these tonight ahead of time for Thanksgiving dinner and they are delicious! If anyone is on the fence about a savory sweet potato dish I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Very good recipe. I’m not a big fan of Sweet Potatoes, so any recipe that make me really enjoy them is a winner.

I’ve made this twice. The first time I just threw stuff in the bag without really measuring, and the sweet potatoes turned out delicious. Trying them again tonight, but I’ve been measuring and not so sure about the amount of garlic or Parmesan as seems like a lot for 2 sweet potatoes. Then again I am sure we will like them just as much. Great recipe for sweet potatoes.

Made this dish last evening to serve alongside a Magret du Canard. I was very curious at what the profile might end up being as I was not feeling positive about sweet potato marrying up with garlic. Sorry to say, my fears were realized. IMHO, it just doesn’t work.

LOVED these! I have horrible knife skills so I cut them into bite sized chunks (great for my young kids!). I baked them uncovered for 30 Mona then sprinkled with Parmesan and bake for an extra 5-10 minutes.

I like this recipe, did not want a traditional sweet one! I used 3 yams and more garlic! The house smells like a restaurant! I covered the yams with foil for the first 30 minutes, to be sure they would be tender, then removed the foil and let them roast a few more minutes. I served them with grilled Rib Eye steak. Heavenly!

This was really great. My husband couldnt stop himself from gobbling them up! And it turned out pretty enough to serve for company. Will definitely be making this one again….and I doubled the garlic but thats just the way we roll here. 😉

I made this for Thanksgiving and we really enjoyed it. I’ve been doing them “sweet” (canned yams, brown sugar and butter, etc,) forever and wanted to try something different. Loved them fresh and with the more savory flavor profile. Thanks for sharing.
