Berries
- Rinse/Soak your berries.
- Let them drain then spread them out on a paper towel lined sheet tray to dry. Berries should be completely dry before storing.
Raspberries, blackberries and black raspberries take a little longer because of all their crevices. Gently roll them around after about a half hour and allow them to continue drying.
- Berries should be stored in a container that has adequate air flow (not completely sealed) and with a paper towel to minimize moisture buildup.
The paper towel method:
This is a perfect time to re-use those berry containers from the grocery store (or a similar type of container that has vents or a loose fitting top). Line them with a paper towel and place a single layer of berries, another paper towel etc. Don’t stack too many layers for more delicate berries. Check on them every couple of days. Remove any mushy berries and use or eat right away.
Mason Jar method:
Mason Jars also work well. Once the berries are completely dry place them in the mason jar and place the lid on loosely. Check on them every couple of days. Remove any mushy berries and use or eat right away. This method works great for blueberries.
Keep in mind that our berries are not sprayed with any type of fungicide so the shelf life is much shorter than those from the supermarket.
Any soft berries can be easy macerated and tossed into yogurt, smoothies, in cereal or start a freezer bag for future use.
